Collecting, printing, and painting can become complete hobbies on their own. At some point, though, all these small people are supposed to move around a table and disagree with one another.
I have never played a full game of Warhammer 40,000. I have still managed to acquire armies, develop opinions about basing, and spend a suspicious amount of time thinking about whether black armor needs one highlight or two.

This series will cover the rules, the first list, the first game, and every incorrect assumption made along the way. The point is not to arrive prepared. The point is to show what learning the game actually looks like when the collection came first.
There will be rules mistakes. There will also be receipts.
The first useful milestone is simple: choose a small Black Templars force that uses models I already own, understand what every unit is supposed to do, and get everything onto one table.
- Build a legal beginner-sized list
- Learn one phase at a time
- Play slowly enough to understand the decisions
- Write down what made no sense
